| "Curved
Finger" Defined |
| Metric Mechanic's Curved Finger Water Pump
uses a unique "Curved Finger" to reduce the flow restriction
that occurs along the water path from the pump into the front housing. |

Background |
| Our "Curved Finger" Water Pump is a by-product
of Metric Mechanic's involvement in racing. Under racing conditions, our
water temperatures would escalate to about 240°F. After trying an
assortment of different radiators and pulleys, nothing seemed to help
the problem. We finally concluded that the water pump itself needed to
be upgraded but, the physical limitations of the front cover didn't allow
for a larger impeller. However, we noticed that the water coming out of
the pump takes a sharp right angle bend as it goes into the front housing.
Applying what we know about air-flow, it was obvious then that the bend
was a serious obstruction. So, we fabricated a curved aluminum finger
to smoothly guide the water into the front housing. The effect was that
the water temperature dropped by 30° to 210°F by the addition
of the "Curved Finger" alone. Later we flow tested the water
pump and found that at 1200rpms water flow increased by about 10%. |

Introduction
Increasing engine size and compression, requires upgrading the cooling
system. The water pump's output plays an integral part in getting the
engine cooled off. The biggest factor affecting water pump volume is
the impeller. In a high volume water pump here's our criteria for judging
water pump output.
- Impeller Diameter
- Impeller Blade Height
- Number of Blades
- Inlet Housing Diameter
